Hurrah! Tastes duly catered to. As for Offspring, you don't really need to see that to understand The Woman; it's your basic Hills Have Eyes/Texas Chainsaw Massacre retread, primarily valuable because of McIntosh (natch) and because it's interesting to note that the Woman, who's more or less the hero of the second film, is the Big Bad of the first - essentially Leatherface with estrogen. It lends an intriguing dimension to her characterization in The Woman, but, again, it's not essential (not least because Offspring's writer/director, Andrew van den Houten, isn't half the talent Lucky McKee is).

As for The Woods, that's a very flawed film (McKee sort of disowns it nowadays, as it was subject to a lot of studio interference) but worth your while nonetheless. However, as I've said before, you MUST try to get your hands on a copy of the mighty May, in which Angela Bettis delivers the kind of knockout performance that regularly wins Best Actress Oscars in some alternate universe where the Academy Awards are not a complete joke.

AHEM!!! (scroll down to see taste-catering some weeks prior to your righteous comment)

If I had the time to do it (which, sadly, I don't), I would've loved to have written more about The Woman but to be honest I'm still processing it, even months later, especially now that I know it's the sequel to another movie. Wish I'd known that before seeing it. Still got The Woods on my Sky+ box. Been there since middle of last year. :-(

I am THRILLED to note that you got to see The Woman after all (and yes, Chris Cleek absolutely deserves his spot on the Best Villains list - brilliantly vile work by Sean Bridgers, and his comeuppance surely has to rate as the most satisfying one since Death Proof). But I must admit I'm saddened to see no full-length review, or mention of the astonishing Pollyanna McIntosh. WHY WON'T YOU CATER EXCLUSIVELY TO MY TASTES, SHADES OF CARUSO?!?

A wonderful read as always mate. The last section of Cap didn't undermine my enjoyment quite as much as yours but I certainly agree with you on the reasons for its failings. Peggy is one of the best female lead characters I've seen in a long time (and certainly the best in the Marvel films so far) and to lose her and the relationship with Steve in place of some pretty underwhelming set-pieces was disappointing.

I disliked the movie Starter For Ten, yes (haven't read book). Like One Day and the Cameron Crowe canon, it dresses up emotional truths that are surely self-evident to everyone - eg being a total dickhead to people will not get you very far in life - as AMAZING REVELATIONS THAT ONLY AN ARTIST LIKE ME COULD HAVE THOUGHT OF AREN'T I JUST THE TRUTHY TRUTH-TELLER OF TRUTH.

Apparently Nicholls has figured out that if you combine these with situations that are instantly familiar to your readers you can sell fuckloads of books and make a fortune despite being a complete fucking charlatan.

It really was, wasn't it. It made it easier to get through Pirates 4, knowing that he wasn't permanently robbed of his mojo, which kept me going until The Rum Diary (which I also enjoyed somewhat). I can't understand why animated movies don't work like Rango more often, but then the scripts are usually locked down way in advance I guess, while -- from what I can tell -- Rango's was more fluid. Whatever the reasons, the result was magical. The more I see Rango, the more I love it.

Really like that Gore Verbinski video. I always assume actors record their dialogue for animated films separately, but that shoot looks like a riot, and a whole lot of fun. Also, Depp's best work for AGES.

My first draft contained a far less subtle burn. Abysmal performances from both of them, but at least I could watch Pinto with some distance. Punch is in-your-face awful. I've never seen anything like it.

And yes, I realised as I laid into the gooey confection of One Day that I was probably dissing the book too, as the movie's screenplay is bad enough to cast doubt on all of his writing, but I wanted to be fair, having not read it. Your comment, and others on Twitter, have shown my initial misgivings were correct. Didn't you dislike Starter For Ten as well?

"those talented performers Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Anthony Hopkins, as well as Frieda Pinto and Lucy Punch"
I love this burn.

"What could have been the tragic romance of the year is in fact indistinguishable from some kind of unhinged parody ... Any possibility of emotional connection between character and audience is ruined by the gimmicky structure, leaping through time from one improbable event to another as we see two poorly-realised caricatures do and say things you only find in badly-written books. Every possible cliché of the romance genre is crammed in, leaving no room to explore a thought or express an emotion; everything here is exposition, a cacophony of out-of-tune notes blasted at a disbelieving audience ... a pompous confection for a middle-class audience"
Sounds like a pretty faithful adaptation.
